Alumni Email
The Alumni Association advertises "lifetime email" but it is only a forwarding service. The user needs to have a valid email account somewhere else. If they don't have one, they can sign up for one of the free email accounts with Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo, Google's gmail, etc.

- Click on OK to accept the changes.
General
Email Forwarding
The Email Forwarding tool allows people to forward their Clemson account to a different address. If you forward your email and have problems with it, you will need to contact the postmaster at the forwarded site for help. In many cases, forwarding can be avoided by use of Clemson's web mail which allows easy access to your Clemson email from any web browser.
If you use a departmental account, it is strongly recommended that you "advertise" your userid@clemson.edu address even though you have it forwarded. Departmental machines may come and go, or you may switch departments. Use of the forwarding mechanism means that you can switch mail accounts and not lose any email.
Out of the Office/Vacation Notice
Setting up an auto-response to all your incoming email while you are out of the office can only be done through your mail client and is NOT recommended at this time. To do so means that you must leave your computer and email client up and running while you are out.
LISTSERV® Mailing Lists
Error Message: Email to Class Lists Is Rejected as Unauthorized
What's the normal expected delay when authorized users (say, JohnDoe@hotmail.com) are added to a listserv mailing list via the CRSM mainframe interface?
It usually doesn't take effect until Listserv is restarted at midnight. Another problem is that the mainframe interface is quirky. You have to make your changes in CRSM, press the ENTER key, then press the F3 key. If the keys aren't hit in that exact order, the information displays in CRSM but doesn't propagate to the mail server.
For emergencies, faculty have 3 options,
- Set up a personality for "userid@clemson.edu" and use it to send messages to class lists,
- Use web mail to send messages to class lists until the update processes,
- Send email to postman@clemson.edu and ask us to check/update the list as necessary.

Problems Receiving Mail
Error Message: "Connection Reset by Remote Site (10054)"
If you get this error message while connected to the Clemson network, it usually means that your network registration (NetReg) has expired. Open up a browser, enter any URL, and the NetReg page will pop up asking you to register your computer. Note: laptops with ethernet & wireless connections need to register both connections.
WARNING: This e-mail has been altered by MIMEDefang.
Certain types of attachments, including ZIP and RAR files are not allowed to pass through the Clemson mail server. This is to help control the spread of viruses. Even though all messages on the mail server are scanned for viruses and all individuals should be running antivirus software, we've been hard hit by new viruses that slipped through before new virus definitions were developed and released.
However, you can still send/receive "banned files if you rename the extension and tell the recipient to change it back after he/she receives it.
For example, if your file is named price2.zip, you can rename it
price2.zee
then attach it to your message. In the message, tell the recipient to rename the file back to
price2.zip
and uncompress as normal.

Spam, Viruses, and Other Junk Mail Issues
Web Mail (Squirrel Mail)
Can't Delete Messages in Web Mail (Over Quota)
Can't use Clemson's web mail client to clean out messages because user has exceeded disk quota or because the message is too large?
Why? By default, web mail tries to move the message to trash. There's no room for it, so it gives an error message.
Change OPTIONS to immediately delete the message instead of using the TRASH can.
- Click on OPTIONS link.
- Click on FOLDER PREFERENCES link.
- Under SPECIAL FOLDER OPTIONS change "Trash Folder" setting to "Do not use trash."
- Click on SUBMIT button at bottom of page.
Now switch back to the IN box and delete your messages.
Note: This setting deletes everything immediately instead of sending it to trash. You can restore the original trash setting after you delete the large messages if you want.
