General

How do I activate my Google Apps for Education account?

Go to the Email Control (Forwarding) Panel. Check the box to create the account. Accept the terms and conditions for the account.

After your Google Apps for Education account is activated, you will need to change your temporary password and add your Clemson University account as a valid "From address.

You will also need to change your temporary Google password to a permanent, non-expiring password.

Go to http://g.clemson.edu to access your Google Apps for Education email account.

What services are included with my Google Apps for Education account?

Your Google Apps for Education account includes email, Google Talk, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and a Calendar service. Other services may be added in the future as they are available and appropriate.

Can I log on to other Google-sponsored services with my Google Apps for Education username and password (e.g. gmail.com, blogger.com, etc.)?

Your Google Apps for Education username and password will only work with the services that have been deployed within the Clemson domain. To access other Google services, you will need to apply for a non University account through Google.

Who is eligible to participate in the Google Apps for Education service?

Google Apps for Education accounts are available to:

  • All undergraduate students
  • Graduate students
  • Faculty
  • Staff

Faculty and staff need to verify that forwarding e mail to a Google Apps for Education account is acceptable to any departmental, contract or other policies to which they must adhere.

Why are the Google Apps for Education services for enrolled students slightly different from similar services that are publicly provided by Google?

Google Apps for Education accounts have been customized for optimal educational collaboration. As a member, you will not see advertisements and Clemson University branding will appear at the top of most Google Apps for Education pages. In addition, Clemson University has taken steps to ensure that your student data is protected above and beyond a publicly available account.

When the Google Apps for Education service becomes the default service for students, am I required to use it?

Google Apps for Education roll-out plans may include Fall 2008 incoming eligible students automatically receiving Google Apps for Education accounts.

It is up to the individual user to decide whether or not they would like to utilize the Google Apps for Education account or if they would rather forward the email sent to the Google Apps for Education account to an outside account.

Are Google Apps for Education accounts accessible for students with disabilities?

The basic HTML version of Google Apps for Education is fully compliant with current accessibility standards. You can also use a POP email client of your choice to download and read your Google Apps for Education email.

How do I disable my account?

Go to the Email Control (Forward) Panel and remove the check from the check box.

Security and Privacy

Is my Google Apps for Education account secure and private?

This service is being provided by the University as the primary email/collaboration system for eligible students. University policies could apply to the service.

Google Apps for Education accounts have been customized for optimal educational collaboration. Clemson University has taken steps to ensure that your student data is protected above and beyond a publicly available account. As an organization, Google is currently SAS 70 Type I compliant.

Google has promised to uphold a strict privacy policy and to always treat your personal information with the utmost care and security. Read more about Google Privacy & Security. Keep in mind that Google has agreed that Clemson student data is subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) when in Google's possession.

How do I ensure that my data stays secure when I'm using a shared or public computer?

IMPORTANT WARNING: Just closing the Web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) will not end your session and the next user will have full access to your Google Apps for Education account. Click the sign out button when you are finished using your Google Apps for Education account on a shared or public computer and then close the browser.

Can I access Google Apps for Education from anywhere on the Internet?

It has been reported that people located in countries that support censorship sometimes experience difficulty viewing or receiving information from Google and or Clemson University systems. This challenge exists regardless of the service provider. Users are encouraged to utilize a University-provided Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection that may, in some cases, lessen the difficulty. Clemson will continue to address specific issues as they arise.

Email

What is the Google Apps for Education email client?

Google Apps for Education email client is a Google-powered email service. The service offers 2 Gigabytes of storage for each account.

It can be found at http://g.clemson.edu.

To ensure continued mail delivery in the future, you should notify your contacts of your new address and begin to use it as your primary University email address.

How can I reflect a formal name change within my Google Apps for Education account?

Students need to formally change their name through the Registrar. The Clemson University online directory will reflect your change within one business day.

Employees will need to contact their budget center for information about changing their name.

You will also need to go to the Google Apps for Education Account Management page to change the name within your Google Apps for Education account.

NOTE: While your default account username will never change, nicknames can be added to reflect name changes.

How do I change the "Sent From" name on my account?

Follow these steps to change the Sent-From name on your account.

Can I send and receive email from other accounts within my Google Apps for Education account?

Yes. Follow these five steps to add other email accounts to send and receive mail within your Google Apps for Education account.

Can I transfer information from my Hotmail/Gmail/Yahoo, etc. account to my Google Apps for Education account?

To transfer information from one account to another, users can either manually forward individual messages to Google Apps for Education accounts or perform a bulk merge.

NOTE: CCIT does not currently recommend or support the merging of Google Apps for Education accounts with other accounts, such as Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. If you choose to use Google's Mail Fetcher service, you run the risk of your personal account being locked for excessive traffic.

Can I import contacts I already have into my Google Apps for Education account?

How do I find other CU email addresses?

Utilize the Clemson Phonebook to find other Clemson addresses, and as you send messages from your Google Apps for Education account, addresses are automatically added to your address book.

Will my Google Apps for Education account be compatible with Clemson mailing lists?

Yes. You should receive all listserv messages in your new Google Apps for Education account as long as you are subscribed to the list from either:

  • @Clemson.edu address
  • Google Apps for Education address

Sending Listserv Messages to non-Clemson lists:
After your Google Apps for Education account is activated, it is imperative that you add your @Clemson.edu address to your Google Apps for Education account so you can send messages to non-Clemson listservs to which you are subscribed.

When you need to send a message to a listserv or reply to a message that was received from a closed listserv, be sure to select the @Clemson.edu address from the drop down list in the From field before sending any email to the listserv. Also make sure that you have selected the Reply from the same address the message was sent to option.

How do I set-up vacation messages/auto-forwarding for my Google Apps for Education account?

You can create a vacation response in your Google Apps for Education account that will automatically reply to anyone who emails you.

Forwarding capabilities are also available within your account settings.

What happens to my existing forward when I activate a Google Apps for Education account?

All new mail sent to your @Clemson.edu address will automatically forward to your new Google Apps for Education address. If you would like to forward mail sent to your Google Apps for Education account to an outside account (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail), change your account settings.

NOTE: Do not forward mail from your Google Apps for Education account to your @Clemson.edu address.

What happens to my CU Directory entry after account activation?

After activating your Google Apps for Education account, your Clemson Directory entry will change to reflect your new mailbox information (e.g. tiger7Google Apps for Education). This change cannot be altered as it is your key to staying connected to Clemson's various online services.

How do I report junk email or account abuse?

Use the Report Spam button to let Google know if you received junk email or a spoofed message.

Use the Report Phishing link to let Google know if you have received a phishing message. You will see a red warning message at the top of any emails that are suspected of referencing a phishing site.

If you think that your Google Apps for Education mail account has been compromised, contact ITHelp@clemson.edu. Please include the header of the suspicious message and the entire message text. You should also change your password.

Can I use other email applications to read my Google Apps for Education mail?

Yes. POP Access is available. A list of available email clients and associated configuration settings is also available.

When configuring POP access, be sure to enter in your full Google Apps for Education email address as the user name. For example, a user name would be JoeWildcat2007@g.clemson.edu instead of JoeWildcat2007.

What if I forget my password?

Visit the Email Control (Forward) Panel to reset your password.

NOTE: This process requires a Network ID username and Network ID password.

How do I change my password?

You can change your password within your account settings. Instructions for changing your password are posted here.

FOR ADDED SECURITY: Your Google Apps for Education password should NOT be identical to your Clemson password. This is because the Google Apps account is hosted by Google, not Clemson University.  Password changes on Google will not change your password on the Clemson network and vice versa.
