”TigerWorking Remotely

When University Employees need to work remotely, CCIT’s Office of Information Security (OIS) recommends the following guidelines:

  • Ensure all computing devices have the latest system and application updates installed before taking them home.
  • Make sure you have antivirus software installed and updated on computers and laptops.
  • Continue to use University provided resources for work related communications – do not use personal email accounts to conduct University business.
  • Verify you are using secure connection methods such as https or the University’s VPN when connecting to online services.
  • Ensure devices are backed up, password protected, and encrypted in case of loss, theft, or failure.
  • Only use University provided cloud storage solutions such as Box, Microsoft OneDrive, and Google Drive to store information.
  • Ensure you can continue to receive and respond to Duo multi-factor authentication notifications when logging into University resources from off-campus.
  • Keep valuables secured in transit – don’t leave laptops or tablets visible in a vehicle.
  • Beware of phone scams and phishing emails related to COVID-19. Approved University communications will be distributed from a “@clemson.edu” account.

Remote Access:

If you need to access resources only available on the campus network, you will need to ‘virtually’ connect your computer to campus using our CU Virtual Private Network (CUVPN). You can find instructions for downloading, installing, and connecting to CUVPN on the Clemson Knowledge Base. You can even connect to CUVPN from your mobile device by following these instructions.

Keep Your Home Network Secure:

Depending on your Internet Service Provider, you may have purchased your own wireless router, or it may have been provided for you. Your wireless network should be encrypted (meaning it requires a password). The most up to date wireless encryption standards are WPA2 and WPA3. One of these should be an option in your wireless router configuration. If not, you may want to consider a newer router. It’s also recommended that you change the default admin login and password on your router.

Before returning to work on campus, be sure to do the following:
  • Verify operating system and software updates have been applied.
  • Run an antivirus scan on all computers and attachable storage devices.
  • Ensure devices are backed up, password protected, and encrypted in case of loss, theft, or failure.
  • Keep valuables secured in transit – don’t leave laptops or tablets visible in a vehicle.
  • Be sure to check in all equipment back to the area responsible for your inventory management.
