Concerning VoIP Telephony Services
IP Phones/Soft Phones/Extension Mobility
Mobility is one of the primary benefits of using voice over IP (VoIP) devices. However, this benefit can complicate the effectiveness of 911 emergency services. Clemson University’s support of 911 emergency dialing from IP phones, soft phones, and extension mobility devices is safe and reliable when you are in the original location given to Telecommunications for that device and phone number. We require that you provide the physical location where you will be using our service for 911 purposes. This location is used to route 911 calls to your local emergency center.
If you move a VoIP device or change the location of its phone number, the 911 emergency center WILL NOT be able to locate you. It is your responsibility to contact Telecommunications to update the location information for the device in order to reestablish 911 support. It takes approximately two (2) days for a location to be updated in the 911 database. Only one location can be specified for each phone number.
BY THIS ACKNOWLEDGMENT YOU UNDERSTAND THAT 911 EMERGENCY DIALINGS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ABOVE DEVICES HAS THE FOLLOWING LIMITATIONS, WHICH YOU MUST UNDERSTAND BEFORE ACTIVATION:
- VoIP service may not work during a power outage, or when the Internet connection fails or becomes overloaded.
- VoIP 911 calls may correctly connect to the PSAP, but not automatically transmit the user’s phone number and/or location information.
- VoIP customers may need to provide location or other information to their VOIP providers for their VoIP 911 service to function properly.
- VoIP customers are required to promptly update their physical address information in the event of a location change by notifying firstname.lastname@example.org.
- VoIP customers should NOT dial 911 from a mobile Soft Phone (i.e. Jabber or WebEx Teams) device.
