University Macs to be encrypted by CCIT on Oct. 26

On Thursday, October 26, 2023, CCIT will encrypt all University-owned Mac computers using FileVault Encryption. Per Clemson University encryption guidelines, all University-owned computers must be encrypted and the computer’s FileVault Encryption key managed by CCIT. Faculty and staff members who use a University-owned Mac were contacted by email on Wednesday, October 18.

Encryption is used to protect data on your computer from being compromised. The encryption process could take anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, and most simple tasks, like checking email, will still be available during this time. Users with a University-owned Mac are encouraged to enable encryption before Thursday during a time when it is most convenient for them, such as during a break or at the end of their work day. Use these instructions to start the encryption process; you will use the Clemson Self Service app and select “FileVault Encrypt.” After 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, all Mac computers that are unencrypted will have encryption enabled.

Follow this HDKB article for instructions on how to enable FileVault Encryption on a Mac. Before proceeding, ensure that any important data is backed up and any open files are saved.
